Monday Myth: Exercising in cold weather is counter productive




I've kind of neglected the fitness part of the blog for a while now. I guess most of the issues that people complain about comes from the love and relationship category so I tend to forget this part of the blog. Nevertheless, this remains a full part of the blog. We have to learn to take care of ourselves and be informed. I got a mail from a reader that asked questions based on fitness and I remembered this part of the blog. I then decided to make today's Monday Myth about fitness. I'll be tackling her question later in the day.

Today we are going to be talking about working out in cold weather conditions.









What's the first thing that comes to your mind when someone mentions working out and loosing weight? I don't know about you in particular but I know for sure that most people instantly start thinking of the sweat that they would have to drip in order to loose weight. Because of this, naturally our mind tends to associate sweating with weight loss. While this is true in a way, it is actually a common misconception because sweating doesn't automatically equal weight loss or at least healthy weight loss. Weight loss actually comes from your body working hard to burn the extra calories that you have accumulated through the food and nutrients you have eaten. The way to burn that food is by getting your heart rate up and revving up your metabolism through the exercises that you engage in. This is the reason why people who work out in cold weather conditions feel it's counter productive, because the amount of sweat their body produces isn't as much as when they workout in the hot weather.

The truth is that as long as you are exercising and getting that heart rate up, it doesn't matter the temperature you are working out in. You can workout in a very hot weather or a very cold weather but what matters most is your heart rate. The reason why it seems you are doing nothing in the cold weather is that the sweat that manages to come out is easily evaporated because of the temperature. It doesn't necessarily mean that you are working any less than the people who workout in hotter weather conditions. The sweat is actually coming out but as I've just said, it evaporates quicker and you barely get to notice it.

A common mistake that people make is to block off any form of air supply to get their sweat running faster. While this would get your sweat pumping, it could be dangerous because your body needs oxygen as you workout. Working out in a well ventilated area is good and it helps supply oxygen to your muscles, this is very essential if you want to develop them. Because of the high level of activity and increased breathing rate, if you are in a place with little oxygen supply you have to know that you stand a chance of suffocation. The oxygen is bound to run out and if you do not take care you could bring some serious harm to yourself. So if you do this often, I ask you now to work out in an are with good oxygen flow. As a matter of fact, anytime you want to workout, go to a place with good air supply. Just make sure that you are working out as hard as you can, pay no mind to the sweat and you will be fine. You will get the results you are looking for.
